Risk Management

Risk management underpins the safety and quality program at Skin Cancer Day Surgery and risk management principles are used in the day to day functions of the facility. The risk management program aims to avoid, reduce occurrence or reduce consequences of the identified risk.

SCDS has extensive policies and procedures in place, auditing and surveillance program and incident management system to ensure we comply with all standards, regulations and legislation. This includes:

 

Infection Prevention & Control

Skin Cancer Day Surgery has a comprehensive infection prevention and control program in place. Our facility and staff are regularly audited for compliance with. Please see page on Infection Prevention & Control for further information.

 

All Patients are risk-assessed as appropriate for surgery at Skin Cancer Day Surgery prior to admission. Should a patient not meet our admission criteria, the treating doctor will make alternative suitable arrangements.

Credentialing of Medical and Nursing staff

Skin Cancer Day Surgery has a policy for credentialing of medical practitioners and nursing staff. This policy ensures that the clinical workforce is appropriately credentialed and have their scope of practice defined in accordance with their level of skill and experience.

Medical Practitioner credentialing is in accordance with Credentialing and Scope of Clinical Practice for Senior Medical Practitioners Policy 2020 and Department of Health Service Regulations.

 

Part of the credentialing process, is ensuring the clinical workforce are appropriately trained and their skills are up-to-date. Annual training and competency includes:

  • Emergency procedures (basic life support, fire and evacuation)

  • Infection prevention and control (hand hygiene, aseptic technique, antimicrobial stewardship)

  • Patient-centred care (cultural safety, cognitive impairment, communication for safety, comprehensive care)

  • Risk management (privacy, incident management, open disclosure and statutory duty of candour)

  • Occupational health and safety (manual handling, workforce health).

By-Laws

Skin Cancer Day Surgery operates under By-laws that support and facilitates a quality health service that delivers safe care. The By-Laws:

  • ​Establish the principles applying to the accreditation and defining scope of practice of practitioners

  • Govern the relationship of Skin Cancer Day Surgery with its accredited practitioners

  • Set out rules for the conduct of accredited practitioners at Skin Cancer Day Surgery

  • Outline the obligations on accredited practitioners in relation to the safety and the quality of care of patients

  • Ensure that a clinical governance framework is in place to evaluate, monitor and improve the quality and safety of the services provided

  • Set out the scope of practice for services the facility can safely support.
