SURGERY FEES
Private Health Funds (Insured Patients)
The Skin Cancer Day Surgery has contracts with most major Health Funds. The excess payment, which is payable on admission, is dependent upon the agreement and level of health insurance cover each individual holds with their Health Fund.

Our dedicated team at SCDS will complete a hospital eligibility check with your health fund and advise you if you have any policy excess, co- payments or any out of pocket expenses prior to your day hospital visit. If your health fund is not contracted by Skin Cancer Day Surgery, or if you do not have private health insurance, an out of pocket expense will be incurred and you will be notified prior to your visit. All out of pocket expenses are to be paid in full to the Skin Cancer Day Surgery on the day of hospital admission prior to the procedure. Please contact the team on (03) 9888 3590 to enquire about whether the SCDS has a contract with your chosen Health Fund.
Non-Insured Patients
For patients without private health insurance, fees associated with admission to the day hospital include the following: Doctor's Fees and Facilities Fees. The Government sets a Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) fee for most services. The MBS fee is used to work out how much Medicare will pay for a service provided by a health care facility or Service Provider. Each procedure involved in your treatment will have a MBS ‘item number’ and there is normally a MBS fee for each item number. When you are a Private Patient having in-hospital treatment, Medicare will pay 75% of the MBS fee and your health fund will pay the additional 25% provided you are eligible for benefits for those items under your health insurance policy. Our doctors participate in Gap Cover schemes with most Health Funds and as such, do not charge any out of pocket expenses.
This fee includes the administrative and financial expenses incurred in providing the specialized equipment and personnel necessary to support the doctor. This includes histotechnicians, nurses and other non-medical staff. Post-operative care is generally included within this fee. It is difficult to provide an exact quote for your treatment as additional procedures such as grafts or flaps may be required on the day, depending on the width and depth of the cut required. There will be an out of pocket expenses which will need to be paid on the day of surgery. The cost will be dependent on whether the type of surgery required is for (Mohs surgery or Standard surgery). Mohs Micrographic Surgery Micrographic surgery is a more expensive procedure as it includes the cost of having a histotechnician on the premises and for specialised equipment and staffing requirements. This procedure can take between 2 to 5 hours . A facility fee of $1,000 will be charged and this is an ’out of pocket cost’ to the patient. Standard Surgery Standard surgery usually takes about half an hour. A facility fee of $500 will be charged and this is an “out of pocket" cost to the patient.
